That afternoon we were scheduled to meet with some representatives of UNEAC (the Cuban Writers and Artists Union), which was interesting, if a bit lengthy. Four gentlemen sat chatting in the cool shade of the front room and were happy to assist me in doing portraits. My Spanish dates back to college (a time period ever receding into ancient history) and was never really strong to begin with, but I got along as I usually do – with minimal vocabulary, lots of sign language and big goofy grin.
