Che Memorial
Santa Clara, Cuba
December 10, 2003
Heading westward from Pinar del Rio, we arrived at the town of Santa Clara, in the province of the same name.
This is Che territory. A dedicated revolutionary, and Fidels right hand man, Che was responsible for winning some of the most decisive battles of the Revolution, many of which occurred in this province. It is no wonder then that when his bones were recovered from the jungles of Bolivia where he was killed, a memorial was built here in Santa Clara to house his remains and those of the people who died with him. It is a solemn place bags are confiscated, hats removed and silence must be maintained as you pass in front of the mausoleums of these revered fighters. An eternal flame burns in the sanctum and over it all stands this giant statue of Che, poised in readiness for battle.
