Cimarrones Dance
Palenque de las Cimarrones
Viñales Valley, Cuba
December 9, 2003
Many escaped slaves (called Cimarrones) took refuge in the limestone caves that abound in Viñales Valley. Our lunch today was at the Palenque de las Cimarrones restaurant. You had to walk through a narrow cave to get to the restaurant, a journey made all the more fun for our group as the lights were out of order. The restaurant itself was on the far side of the mogote. As we passed out of the cave, these men performed a dance for us in the recreated camp of the escaped slaves.
