Malecón Curlicues
Havana, Cuba
December 7, 2003

Unfortunately, the sunrise was a bit disappointing that morning. Stormy clouds kept the sun from revealing itself as it rose above the city streets. The Malecón itself was dark and abandoned looking, almost post-apocalyptic in its emptiness. The relatively ornate streetlamps seemed so oddly out of place against the crumbling facades of the old buildings.

The elegant decay of Havana streets is part of the charm of the city, but I must wonder how often the residents of that city stop to appreciate the charm of living in buildings which would be condemned as uninhabitable here. It’s easy to romanticize things which you don’t have to experience them.
